Vloedgraven drops opening match at ITA Tennis Championship
Junior moves into consolation draw Friday at Yale

Championship Central

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Binghamton men's tennis junior Sven Vloedgraven dropped his opening match Thursday afternoon at the ITA National Indoor Championship, hosted by Yale. Vloedgraven, the ITA Northeast champion, lost 6-2, 6-3 to seventh-seeded Bradley Klahn of Stanford. He will now move into the consolation bracket, which begins Friday afternoon at Yale's Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center.

Klahn, ranked 15th in the nation, held a slim 3-2 first-set lead before breaking Vloedgraven in the sixth game and rattling off three straight games to close out the set. The 2009 Pac-10 singles and doubles champion and ITA National Rookie of the Year then broke faway rom a 3-3 tie in the second set to end the match.

"Sven played pretty good for his first national tournament - especially against a high-ranking opponent," head coach Adam Cohen said.

The elite ITA draw features six of the nation's top-10 players and 10 of the top-20 players.

Vloedgraven, the reigning America East Player of the Year and America East Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year, is virtually assured of earning BU's highest-ever national ranking when the ITA releases its midseason rankings in early January.
