EUGENE, Ore. -- Pole vaulter
Rory Quiller (West Point, N.Y.), who capped his collegiate career at Binghamton with a NCAA Indoor championship in March, tied for 14th in the preliminary round of the Olympic Trials on Friday night at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. The top 13 out of 24 participants advanced to the finals, which will be held Sunday at 5:40 p.m. EST.

Quiller cleared his opening height of 17-8 1/2 but was unable to make 18-0 1/2 on his next three attempts. The top 13 vaulters in the competition all made at least 18-0 1/2. Defending world champion Brad Walker had the top vault of the evening, clearing 18-4.

Despite not advancing to the finals, Quiller made history as the first Division I athlete from Binghamton University to take part in the U.S. Olympic Trials.

In its history, Binghamton has had two student-athletes qualify for the U.S. Olympic Team. John Moreau (Class of 1977) competed in fencing at the 1984 and 1988 Summer Olympics (held in Los Angeles and Seoul respectively). Chris Coleman (Class of 1989) took part in the bobsled event at the 1992 and 1994 Winter Olympics (held in Albertville, France and Lillehammer, Norway respectively). Both Moreau and Coleman are in the Binghamton Athletic Hall of Fame.
