Naglieri (sports@binghamton.edu) Phone: 607-777-2956 BU women's swimming announces '08-09 incoming class VESTAL, N.Y. -- The Binghamton women's swimming and diving program has announced the addition of 10 high school seniors to its roster for the 2008-09 season. Tricia Alejandro (Valley Stream, N.Y.), Elizabeth Hawkins (Westfield, N.J.), Maria Mazzoni (Franklinville, N.J.), and Margaret Rakoczy (Greenwich, Conn.) have signed National Letters of Intent to join the Bearcat program for the 2008-09 campaign. The foursome, which consists of three out-of-state recruits, is highlighted by three Speedo Sectional qualifiers and a pair of USA Swimming Scholastic All-Americans. Alejandro is a Speedo Sectional qualifier and USA Swimming Scholastic All-American. The Valley Stream, N.Y., native swam for Coach Brian Brown at the renowned Asphalt Green Unified Aquatics (AGUA) club in New York City. "Tricia is expected to lead our IM swimmers and make a big contribution in the distance events," said head coach Sean Clark. Hawkins, a YMCA national qualifier, comes to Binghamton from Westfield High School in New Jersey, where her team captured the 2007 NJ Public "A" Swim Championships. She was also a member of a 200-free relay squad that set a NJ YMCA state meet record. "Liz is a sprinter with great potential in multiple strokes," said Clark. "We will welcome her all-around speed in individual events as well as on our relay squads." Mazzoni is a Speedo Sectional qualifier in the middle distance free events, and the second of two incoming recruits that have earned USA Swimming Scholastic All-American recognition. She also swam for the GCIT Swimming Club in Gloucester County under former Binghamton assistant coach Matt Sprang (2003-04). "Maria is expected to be one of our top swimmers in the 200 and 500-free, and should also score points for us in the 200-fly," said Clark. Rakoczy rounds out the incoming trio of Speedo Sectional qualifiers. The Greenwich, Conn., native swam for the Empire Swimming Club where she qualified to compete at the YWCA National meet. "Margaret will solidify our 200 and 500 freestyle group" said Clark. "She should prove to be a strong flyer as well." The four signees will be joined by a trio of divers Carly Clark (Salisbury Mills, N.Y.), Jenna Easton (Churchville, N.Y.), and Morgan Neal (Pittsford, N.Y.), all of which competed in the 2007 NY State HS (NYSPHSAA) Championships, as well as swimmers Kylie Cremer (Blue Point, N.Y.), Stacey Golden (Highland Park, N.J.), and Erin Carr (Brewster, N.Y.). These six student athletes all have committed to the University and will compete this Fall. The Bearcats open up the 2008-09 season with the annual Green and White intrasquad scrimmage exhibition meet on October 4 at the Patricia A. Saunders Aquatic Center. |
